As the Project Coordinator Team Leader of the Integrated Sustainability & Urban Creativity Centre (ISUC) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), I recently had the privilege of coordinating our first Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with The Lost Food Project (TLFP). This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability and social impact.

A Partnership Rooted in Purpose
On August 29, 2023, APU and TLFP formalized a partnership aimed at combating food waste and supporting underprivileged communities. TLFP, a Malaysian non-profit organization, is dedicated to rescuing surplus food and redistributing it to those in need. Through this MoA, we aim to educate volunteers on utilizing excess produce to create sellable items, imparting this knowledge to the B40 community to generate sustainable income.

Learning the Ropes of Protocol

Coordinating this MoA was a learning experience in understanding formal protocols and procedures. From organizing meetings to ensuring all stakeholders were aligned, I gained invaluable insights into the intricacies of formal agreements and the importance of clear communication.

Empowering Communities Through Education

Our collaboration extends beyond food redistribution. APU engineering students will train volunteers on composting and biomass utilization with overripe produce. Additionally, we plan to assist lower-income communities with financial planning and marketing techniques, aiming to create a holistic approach to sustainability.

Cultivating Sustainable Practices
To minimize waste, we will implement a First In First Out (FIFO) method for inventory management. Moreover, we plan to cultivate herbs and vegetables in recycled containers, empowering the B40 group to generate income through sustainable practices.

Engaging the Wider Community

Our initiatives will include competitions, campaigns, and awareness programs involving schools and community members. By fostering community engagement, we hope to inspire innovative ways to utilize excess produce and promote responsible consumption.

Looking Ahead

This MoA is just the beginning. As we continue our collaboration with TLFP, we remain committed to reducing food waste and improving the well-being of underserved communities. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this meaningful cause and look forward to the positive impact we can achieve together.
